Hi everyone! I am Lauren Chase, one of the three new interns at Chimps Inc. I am from Cedar Rapids Iowa and majoring in anthropology and journalism with a Spanish minor. After my first week of work here, I have seen some amazing behavior from the chimps! I want to share one story with you.
Herbie is quite the gentleman. In either an act of friendship or love, he extended his generosity to me. I was working in the lower garden near his enclosure. I watched as he climbed to a platform and looked around for the perfect object. With hardly any effort, he ripped the bill off of a pink baseball cap and pushed the soft fabric through the bars to give it to me as a gift. Then, he pointed at me with his muscular finger--- letting me know that this was truly for me. I felt so special and he definitely won my heart with that gesture.
